- School is rarely a good environment for children with autism. And that’s a problem for two reasons.
First, autistic kids spend a huge amount of time learning how to cope with an environment that is out of sync with their abilities and challenges. Then, having struggled for years to build those skills, they then must LEAVE that environment for a completely different situation when they age out or graduate. For many autistic kids, school is far tougher than any work environment- for many excellent reasons.
It’s, unfortunately, the case that ordinary public school in the 21st century seems to have been designed with the intent of making life difficult and uncomfortable for anyone who has even the mildest of these challenges, all of which go along with autism:
- Sensory Dysfunction
- The Difficulty with Reading or Speech Comprehension
- Executive Functioning Challenges
- Fine and Gross Motor Challenges
- Social Communication Difficulties
- Difficulty With Changes in Routines and Schedules
- Difficulties Surrounding Changing Rules and Expectations
- Lack of Tolerance for Autistic Behaviors and Passions
