Integration of children with autism spectrum disorders in mainstream education kindergartens – this situation raises a number of challenges to the people, working in kindergartens. The teacher in these cases is faced with two major challenges: how to deal with the child’s behaviour and help him/her get involved in common activities, and most importantly, how to inform the parent about their concerns and observations. Children with autism spectrum disorders often bite, push, roll down on the floor, sway or scream uncontrollably. No, this is not aggression, it is not a child’s whim, nor it is just stubbornness. Familiar pedagogical approaches do not help in this case! This article provides some specific tips that could facilitate the integration of children with autism spectrum disorders into the mainstream education environment, as well as good practices for managing a situation when a child has a crisis episode: Offer new and unfamiliar things to the child slowly, gradually and in parts. Get acquainted with the sensory perceptions and deficits of the particular child. If possible, use any kind of visual illustration. Be patient and persistent! Success is in the small steps every day! This article could be helpful for teachers at kindergartens. The beneficiaries could be children with autism, their parents and teachers.
