Autism is a disorder specific to each child. As the teacher does not know the child whom he/she will work with, the preliminary meeting with the parents is of a great importance. They will give information about what would bother the child and what would calm him/her down, what the child can and cannot do. The teacher must prepare in advance the questions he will ask the parents. A conversation with the child’s previous teachers and the specialists who have worked with him – speech therapist, occupational therapist and others can be helpful. Some things that seem harmless can cause a child with autism to break out. It should be noted that surprises, changes and unforeseen situations are difficult for people with autism to handle and can upset their fragile emotional balance. Before each action, it should be explained to the child and we should make sure that he/she understands it – wait for the reaction before continuing. The child with autism always sits at one and the same place, next to the same student. The place can be marked with his/her own name or photo. The established order brings confidence and calmness to the child with autism and helps to avoid the appearance of problematic behavior. When working with the child, a face-to-face position is recommended so that they can interact. But for some children and in some situations it is more acceptable to be “side by side”. Users – school teachers, special educators, psychologists, psychiatrists and physiotherapists. Beneficiaries – children with Autism in primary and secondary education.
