Inclusion of students with special educational needs and students from different backgrounds in the English classes

On 18 October 2022 we held the third project workshop with 14-year-old students from the “St. Paisii Hilendarski” Secondary School, Plovdiv. Students from different backgrounds, a student with special educational needs, hyperactive students, as well as students with visual impairments participated in that workshop.

At the beginning, Mrs. Ikimova and Mrs. Grudeva recalled the goals and the tasks of the project. Then there was an English lesson.

In the class, there is 1 student with special educational needs who is taught according to an individual study plan.

The first part of the lesson was held in the school yard. The students sat on chairs in a circle, and there was no chair for one student. He/she would stand in the middle of the circle and loudly announce a sign that everyone who possessed it should change their places (eg. whoever had long blond hair should change their places). The announcement was made in English and everyone was happy to join in. The child with special educational needs, with the help of the teacher, was also able to participate in the game.

In the second part of the workshop, the class moved into the classroom and played the Broken Phone game, again in English. The students were divided into two groups and arranged in two rows, and the task was to say quietly a sentence in present simple or present continuous tense in the ear of the other student. The last in the line wrote the sentence that had reached him/her on the whiteboard.

The workshop ended successfully and everyone was satisfied with the results achieved. All the while, we observed mutual help and understanding from everyone. This has shown us that the inclusive process is being implemented successfully and all children are involved willingly and with understanding in all activities and classes, which increases the likelihood that students with special educational needs will achieve the necessary communicative and social progress.

The workshop lasted 40 minutes.
